Cold calling for job seekers
If you are not a sales person, cold calling might not be something that you are comfortable or familiar with but it is a great way to get on the radar of companies that you would like to work with. It is also a great way to uncover job opportunities that are not advertised yet.
Getting started cold calling companies is pretty simple. The first step is research. Look up companies in your industry or who have roles that you are interested it. Do your research and make notes on why you would like to work for them. After that, try to find out who the best person to contact is. If they are not on the website, look on LinkedIn, if you still can’t find them, don’t worry, ask for the person in charge of hiring when you call.
Having a clear message when you call is important so take some time and write a script for yourself. Think of how you want to introduce yourself, what you are looking for and why you want to work for that company. Don’t just write this, practice saying it out loud to ensure it flows well and you are comfortable saying it.
Then get ready to call. Dress the part and find a quiet spot to call. Make sure you have a pen and paper and your resume with you.
When you call, be polite and friendly to every person you speak with. Ask the hiring person if they have time to chat about potential opportunities now, if not find out when would be a good time to call back. Make notes during the call and if there are no jobs available now, you can ask to be kept on file for any future opportunities. Once you have finished the call, make any notes on follow up that you need to do and send an email thanking the person you spoke with for taking the time.
